What is Minerva Canada Safety Management Education Inc.?


A non-profit volunteer-run organization, Minerva Canada, aims to be a global leader in health and safety management education by influencing the curriculum of post-secondary institutions to ensure that future business leaders create healthier and safer workplaces.
The only organization of its kind, it:
  • advocates for increased inclusion of health and safety concepts in business and engineering curricula
  • educates the educators by providing business and engineering professors and instructors in universities and colleges with practical, curriculum-ready tools and initiatives
  • forges partnerships with governments, associations and accreditation boards
  • connects educators with Canada’s business enterprises to learn what industry seeks from new graduates entering the workforce and how health and safety management concepts are being applied in the workplace.
All resources and activities are provided free of charge to educators, financially supported by our roster of blue-chip corporate, organizational and government sponsors.

January 18-21 Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.)
Congratulations to the 2017 business student winning teams from Okanagan College, Saint Mary’s University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University who won the top 3 prizes respectively in the Minerva Human Resources event at the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.). Minerva Canada is the Health and Safety Human Resources event sponsor.

April 2017 Minerva Canada James Ham Safe Design Winners
Congratulations to the 2017 engineering student winning teams from the University of Toronto and University of Regina for their first and second place finishes respectively in the Minerva competition. Teams were awarded their prize money at the May 3,2017 Partners in Prevention Conference in Mississauga, Ontario.

April - June 2017 Minerva Canada Learning Forums and Workshop
Over 300 engineering, business professors and other participants attended Minerva Learning Forums held this year at the University of Regina, Carleton University, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and the British Columbia Institute of Technology as well as a Minerva Workshop in Halifax with participants from various CRSP OHS teaching institutions and Halifax universities . The agenda for each event is on the website. Interested universities and colleges wishing to host a 2018 Learning Forum should contact Minerva Canada .

2017 Minerva Education Award of Honor
Congratulations to Senator Tony Dean for winning the 2017 Minerva Canada Education Award of Honour for his many contributions in advancing Health and Safety in Ontario. The press release describing his contributions and the award is on the Minerva website.

New Minerva Teaching Module “ Mental Health in the Workplace”
This new module, sponsored by Minerva and developed at Laurentian University with content support from Vale, can be found on the Minerva website.

Upcoming Events

2018 Intercollegiate Business Student Competition
Minerva Canada will continue to sponsor the Human Resources event of this competition. Finals will be held in January 2018 with judges being provided from Minerva’s Board of Directors.

2018 Minerva Canada James Ham Safe Design Competition
A Minerva notice with the rules, regulations has been sent to all Canadian Engineering Schools and Colleges concerning this competition with submissions due by April 16, 2018. There are first and second prizes of $3,500 and $1,500. Students are asked to advise Minerva by February 2,2018 if they intend to enter the competition.

2018 Minerva- CIAC engineering student case study competition
The case study will be sent in January inviting all Canadian Engineering Schools to participate in the 2018 Minerva – CIAC Responsible Care engineering student case study competition. Rules and regulations are found on the website.. Finalists will be making presentations at the Partners in Prevention Conference in May 2018.

2018 New Teaching Modules
Minerva Canada has partnered with professors and grad students from Dalhousie University and the University of Alberta to develop teaching modules in 2018 focused on Maritime Risk/Fisheries Safety and Risk Communications.

Proposed Online engineering student Health and Safety Certification program
Minerva Canada is determining if there is sufficient interest from Canadian Engineering Schools to partner with Minerva on the development and implementation of a student H&S certification program that builds upon the content within its Teaching Modules. The details of it were presented at a recent meeting of the Canadian Engineering Deans.
