WHAT IS THE SUMMER INSTITUTE?
The Summer Institute is Minerva's main way of achieving its goal.
The Institute is a three-day intensive workshop introducing professors, teachers, and lecturers to the principles of Safety, Health, and Environmental management. It is usually held in June each year.
During the three days attendees complete the program by:
- Participating in workshops to prepare training materials.
- Discussing cases studies and attending presentations by experts in industry and academia on Safety, Health and Environmental Management.
- Learning from industy representatives and site visits how Safety, Health and Environmental Management concepts are being applied in the workplace and what industry desire from new graduates entering the workplace.
There are two Institute training tracks, one for engineering staff and one for business faculty. The 2004 and 2005 Summer Institute for Chemical Engineering professors was organized under the leadership of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers and focused on process safety management and loss control.
The business track is directed to loss control management as a strategy for improved corporate performance.
2009 SUMMER INSTITUE
26 Engineering professors from across Canada attended the Minerva Summer Institute from May 25-26, 2009. It was hosted by the IAPA at the Centre for Health and Safety Innovation facilities in Mississauga, Ontario. Various case studies and presentations from industry, government, safety associations and academia were made covering the Summer Institute's 6 focus themes on SHE management systems, safety engineering technology, engineering design, ethics, regulations/best practices and teaching methods. A wide array of SHE teaching material was provided to the professors for their Fall 2009 classes.
2010 ENGINEERING SUMMER INSTITUE

I TEACH AT POST SECONDARY LEVEL, AND AM INTERESTED IN SAFETY MANAGEMENT HOW CAN I APPLY TO ATTEND THE SUMMER INSTITUTE?
Space at the Summer Institute is limited and is dependent on funding received each year to support the event.
To attend the event you must:
- Prepare teaching materials and share them with your peers attending the Institute
- Report back to Minerva on your progress with safety management in your teaching program, including details of which courses taught safety management and the amount of time allotted to it.
- Assist Minerva Canada with networking and recruiting future Summer Institute attendees.
